Welding 101

In this video I want to start you off welding as quick as possible. Lets jump right in to only the basics. After this video there will be no reason not to be welding! Below I’ll leave you with a shopping list of things you might need to get started, as well as all the notes and topics I cover in the video!

For metal, go to your local “metal supply”, (google it) and ask if they sell “drops”, aka leftover pieces from other customers who didn’t want to buy the whole sheet!

Notes:
3 main types of welding:
Stick: large thick strong welds
Mig: wire fed with or without gas and easy to use
Tig: two handed tungsten electrode and gas with filler rod

Safety:
gloves: mig tig, stick
welding hood: auto darkening
Clothes: Cotton long sleeves, covered head to toe, maybe a welding jacket to start
Shoes: leather shoes no laces
Ventilation: don’t choke to death! put head down to keep fumes out
Fire Safety: fire extinguishers handy, check surroundings

How a mig welder works:
spool of wire
feeder
cable
gas (if using wire, not flux core)
tip
nozzle
ground clamp
reverse polarity

A good machine makes all the difference in the world
even a professional tennis player would have trouble playing tennis with a cheap racquet.

Wire size: .030 is standard and what I use, use smaller for thin metals and thicker for thick metals
Wire size should match the tip, drive roll, and gun liner

Settings:
Chart
Amperage
Wire Feed Speed

Shielding gas:
75% argon 25% CO2
tank pressure
regulator: around 20-30cfh

Use gas instead of flux core if at all possible!
if using gas you need no wind/ flux core if outside in the wind
you’ll need to knock slag off of flux core welds just like stick welding

Practice, Practice Practice!
practice on 1/8” or 1/4” – sheet metal is an artform
and thick to thin is difficult, learn basics first

Clamp or it’ll warp
Tack – about 3 seconds

Push or Pull – either one works!

Pattern:
U pattern, Cursive e pattern, back and fourth pattern

Types: Butt joint, Fillet weld, tee joint, edge joint, corner joint
try to bevel edges or leave small gap wherever possible

A good weld is all about being comfy! Always use two hands and an elbow, be stable

Weld hotter than colder…

watch your stick out, keep it short! 1/4”-3/8”

Clean the nozzle of spatter frequently, replace tip if needed.
If wire is not consistent, check feed roller or gun liner
Keep your visor clean, its easier to weld when you can see!
make sure you use good clean metal, hit with a flap disk if needed
make sure you have a good ground to bare metal!
